14-Year-Old Girl Seriously Injured After Being Hit by School Van

An eighth grade student was seriously injured after being hit by a school van while crossing the street in a crosswalk in Acton, Massachusetts, on Friday morning.

The crash, which occurred around 7:20 a.m. on Main Street at Hayward Road, shut down part of the road in the area.

Police said the 14-year-old Acton girl was crossing Main Street in a crosswalk when she was struck by a van traveling south. The van involved is a Westford school transportation vehicle.

The girl was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with serious injuries and is in stable condition. Her name has not been released.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and her family," Acton police Lt. Doug Sturniolo said.

The driver, identified only as a 50-year-old woman who was taking another student to a nearby school, stayed at the scene. The driver was described as being "hysterical" when talking to investigators after the crash. She has been released and it's unclear if she will be charged.

Aerial video from Sky Ranger showed police at the scene and a white van stopped nearby. A backpack, sneaker and some schoolwork lay scattered on the ground.

The investigation is ongoing.
