NWS Confirms 2 Tornadoes Touched Down in New England Monday

The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in southern New England on Monday as a severe weather system moved through the region.

Both of the Monday morning tornadoes, one in Connecticut and the other on Cape Cod, were classified as EF-zero, the weakest kind. No injuries were reported.

The weather service said the first of the twisters touched down several times in Stonington and North Stonington, Connecticut, uprooting more than a dozen large trees.

A small tornado also touched down in Falmouth. The weather service said a storm survey concluded that a waterspout in Vineyard Sound came ashore in Woods Hole around 9:58 a.m., and quickly dissipated.

Eyewitness reports at the Woods Hole Golf Club said that four large wooden chair were lifted into the air, swirled around and thrown 500 yards away onto a tennis court. There was no other damage. Two nearby weather stations reported wind gusts of 56 and 65 mph.

The tornado confirmations came after a band of powerful storms rolled through parts of southern New England on Monday morning, touching off thunderstorms and prompting tornado warnings.

The National Weather Service said the captain of a ferry leaving Martha's Vineyard observed a water spout shortly before 10 a.m.

All students in Falmouth public schools were temporarily moved to interior spaces at ground level to wait out the tornado warning. A Falmouth fire official said they weren't dispatched to a single call and the warning passed without incident.

The weather service posted tornado warnings for Block Island, Rhode Island and for a portion of Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.

The afternoon settled down as scattered showers moved through. A batch of chilly air is moving in Monday night and Tuesday, sending the temperatures down into the 40s and low 50s.

That’s not how the rest of the week will roll, though. Warmer air slides in under plenty of clouds for Halloween, saving us from a teeth-chatteringly cold evening.

We’re expecting highs to make it to a hair-raising 60 degrees as temperatures only dip into the 50s around sundown. This warm-up has legs too. Even milder air is expected into Thursday and Friday to finish the workweek.
