Sharks Could be in Massachusetts by Fourth of July

People are paying closer attention after two youths lost limbs in shark attacks in North Carolina on Sunday

A shark expert says great white sharks could be swimming off the coast of Massachusetts in just a matter of weeks.

Gregory Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries told the Boston Herald that the sharks will likely be moving through this area before the Fourth of July.

People are paying even more attention to the deadly aquatic predators of late after a 12-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy lost limbs in separate shark attacks in Oak Island, North Carolina on Sunday. Both were swimming in relatively shallow water not far from shore.

Great white shark sightings aren't uncommon off the coast of Massachusetts, at times prompting officials to temporarily close beaches in some communities.

Last summer, a great white attacked two kayakers trying to photograph seals off the coast of Plymouth. The shark came up from beneath the two women and took a bit out of one of their kayaks. Neither was injured.
