New England

Slow Drying Today, Mostly Dry North Sunday

What to Know

  • Expect skies to brighten up some this afternoon and there's a chance of a nice evening.
  • Farther inland, temperatures may rise up to 70 degrees today.
  • Expect periods of rain on Sunday.

Strong thunderstorms that formed in West Virginia and Pennsylvania last night are now pushing across southern New England and should be ending shortly. The sky is starting off cloudy for most of New England, but we will brighten up this afternoon, and it should be a nice evening.

Temperatures rise to near 70 degrees away from the ocean. There’s not a lot of wind but locally onshore wind keeps the beaches cooler. High pressure comes in tonight with dry air, patchy frost possible in northern New England, otherwise mostly clear with a low temperature in the 40s, some 30s in the hollows.

The same front that has been stalled nearby all week, is settling south tonight, but will lift back north tomorrow. A wave of low pressure along that front may bring a period of rain back to southern New England. The guidance has been shifting back-and-forth on this, and there’s a slight chance that we could have a mostly dry day even in southern New England. It does look like a beautiful day for northern New England, high temperatures will be in the 60s to near 70 degrees where the sun is shining. Cooler where and if and if it rains.

Whatever happens tomorrow, will clear out for a nice Monday. With a mostly sunny sky in the morning, partly sunny in the afternoon, chance of a shower, high temperature near 70 degrees. It gets fuzzy again after that, the old front likely stalls across New England Tuesday with a chance of showers. South of the front much of New England should get into the 70s, but much cooler north of the front near the Canadian border.

It’s almost anyone’s guess and where the front is going to end up on Wednesday, the early call is that it stays across northern New England, so we may get another 70 degrees day in southern New England. But there will be showers developing.

We are all likely on the colder side of the front Thursday with low pressure moving along the front, rain is likely, along with much cooler air, temperatures in the 50s. We then try and clean it up for next weekend and Mother’s Day, but that is not going to be easy as the front is stalled nearby.
