With Snow Falling, World Cup Preps Underway at Killington

Skiers and riders are enjoying top-to-bottom runs at the resort, which is now getting ready to host top talents in ski racing, including Mikaela Shiffrin

As skiers and riders enjoy top-to-bottom runs at Vermont's Killington Resort, the destination is now gearing up to host world-class ski races later this month.

With natural snow falling, Dean Romano and his sons were at Killington Monday from Winthrop, Massachusetts.

"We're excited, yeah, it's why we came up," Romano said of the opportunity for early season top-to-bottom skiing.

"It's snowing here, not at home," added Dean Romano, Jr. "It's just overall fun!"

While they play, the resort is hard at work, getting ready to host the Audi FIS Women's Ski World Cup races at the end of the month.

"Last year, we had about 39,000 fans come," recalled Martha Howe of Killington Resort. "And we're hoping it just keeps increasing."

The snow guns at Killington have been blasting snow on the race course since November 3, preparing for competitors including New England favorite Mikaela Shiffrin.

Monday, necn & NBC10 Boston saw the scaffolding for spectator seating start coming together.

Temperatures favorable for snowmaking are in the forecast for the foreseeable future, and more natural snow was expected to fall into Tuesday.

"The natural snow will only help with the snow they're making on Superstar here," Howe said, referring to the trail that is home to the Audi FIS Women's Ski World Cup stop in Vermont. "The more the merrier, really, just to get it ready for World Cup."

The World Cup races at Killington are Thanksgiving weekend. There's also a concert series that weekend, which is headlined this year by Vermont's own Grace Potter.
