6 Inmates Indicted for Prison Brawl That Left Officers Injured, Facility Locked Down

The Sousa Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts, remained locked down Friday following the brawl on Monday

Six inmates at the Sousa Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts were indicted Friday on assault charges that left six officers injured and the prison on lockdown.

The attack at the maximum-security prison in Shirley on Monday was caught on surveillance video that was released by the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

The video shows an inmate approach the officer station and then attack the officers before other inmates join the assault in the K2 Housing Unit.

Several inmates are seen punching and kicking an officer.

Other officers eventually respond to the attack.

A Department of Correction spokesman says six officers were taken to the hospital and one was under a concussion protocol.

According to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, a grand jury handed up 18 indictments against the six inmates. The inmates and their charges are:

  • Kevin Semiglia, 28, of Chelsea, five counts of assault and battery on a correction officer.
  • Buthchhay Chourb, 29, of Lynn, three counts of assault and battery on a correction officer and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
  • Jacquan McKenzie, 23, of Lynn, three counts of assault and battery on a correction officer.
  • Tiberias Albert, 25, of Fall River, two counts of assault and battery on a correction officer.
  • Javante A. Antone, 22, of New Bedford, two counts of assault and battery on a correction officer.
  • Jamaul W. Vital, 23, of Medford, one count of assault and battery on a correction officer.

The prison remains on lockdown Friday.

NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez was serving a life sentence in a killing when he hanged himself in 2017 at the prison.

The six inmates will be arraigned in Worcester Superior Court at a future date.
