State Trooper Injured While Stopping to Help Motorist

A Massachusetts State Police trooper received minor injuries after another vehicle struck his cruiser early Sunday morning on Interstate 93 in Winchester.

The unidentified trooper stopped to assist a disabled vehicle in the breakdown lane of the northbound side of the highway near Exit 36 in Stoneham.

At 2:22 a.m., a 2005 Nissan Altima struck the cruiser, injuring the trooper in the process, according to state police. The trooper was inside the cruiser when it was struck.

The driver, identified only as a 23-year-old woman from Woburn, was uninjured. The trooper was taken to Winchester Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation and no charges were filed as of this morning.
