A dog stolen from the Animal Rescue League of Boston last month has been safely returned.

ARL officials said someone called the MSPCA on Tuesday with a tip about "Nick," the 3-year-old male, white and gray pit bull-mix dog who had been taken on April 11. MSPCA officials notified the ARL, who went and picked up Nick and safely took him back to the Chandler Street shelter.

"ARL is overwhelmed with joy to have Nick back with the organization, he is healthy and doing great," read a statement from the ARL.

Last month, ARL officials said a 55-year-old Boston man entered the adoption center with a woman and showed an interest in the dog. After a short conversation about adoption, the man allegedly left his Massachusetts driver's license with staff and took the dog for a walk with the woman.

    They never returned.

Since then, the ARL worked with Boston police to find Nick.

"Over the past six weeks the search for Nick has been priority number one," ARL officials said in a statement. "ARL would like to thank the Boston Police Department for their tireless efforts, the MSPCA for their quick response, and members of the media for getting Nick’s story to the masses."

The name of the person who took the dog was not released; it's unclear if they will face charges.
