Severe weather overnight Monday toppled trees, knocked out power for thousands and caused floods in southern New England.
Thunder rumbled in several communities during the storm and lightning set fire to two Cape Cod homes. High winds toppled trees and triggered a tornado warning for Barnstable County, which was later lifted.
Over 3,000 customers in Massachusetts remained without power Tuesday morning.
In Harwich, a large tree uprooted due to winds that were estimated to have reached up to 70 mph. The downed tree blocked half a roadway on Park Street, where it remains as an inconvenience. No injuries were immediately reported in connection to the tree.
Police in Orleans responded to a downed tree blocking Brick Hill Road and removed the hazard from the street. The Orleans Police Department joked if anyone was interested in “small, tart green apples,” there were “7 million of them” at the scene.
In Massachusetts, floods were reported in Fall River and New Bedford. In Westerly, Rhode Island, a section of Route 1 was temporarily closed due to flooding.
