Strawberry Season Starts as Picking Underway at Some Farms

With the arrival of June, comes the arrival of strawberry season in New England.

In fact, the 50th annual Strawberry Festival takes place this Saturday, June 9 in Topsfield.

The crop continues to ripen across Massachusetts, and some farms have already started harvesting.

At Smolak Farms in North Andover, "pick your own" will likely begin in the next week or two.

Michael Smolak says he's expecting a good strawberry crop overall this year, but crops of other fruits on the farm seem to be doing a bit better.

In general, the weather has been favorable for the berries. Winter wasn't too severe, and there was minimal frost damage in the spring.

Smolak says he is also preparing a new strawberry patch on a different part of the farm, in addition to what's already growing this year.
