Students Spark Plastic Ban on Martha's Vineyard

Selling or distributing plastic soda and water bottles will soon be banned on parts of Martha’s Vineyard.

The new bylaw passed at West Tisbury’s Town Meeting earlier this week, and will ban plastic bottles under 34 oz.

While other towns, including some in Massachusetts, have banned single use plastic water bottles in the past, the Vineyard Conservation Society says West Tisbury is the first town in the nation to also ban soda bottles.

The bylaw was created by students at the West Tisbury School, who also heavily advocated for the ban to be adopted.

Chilmark and Aquinnah will vote on a similar bylaw, potentially expanding the ban, over the next few weeks.

The ban goes into place on Jan. 1, 2020.
