Summer Unofficially Starts With Great Beach Weekend

It's been a while since crowds of people have been able to enjoy Massachusetts beaches.

"It was a rough winter, especially here," said Nantasket Beach lifeguard Jake Mullaney. "We had piles of snow almost 17 feet high. It's good to be back out here in the sun."

It seems like it took forever to get here, but now that's it has unofficially arrived, there is a lot of optimism that this summer will be worth the wait.

"There's going to be more people this year ready for the sun, ready to go out and enjoy the beach," said Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation ranger Kerri-Ann Hanley.

But the DCR says there are things you should know before laying out the beach blanket.

Until mid-June, lifeguards are only on duty at most state beaches on the weekend. Even when they are there, they're asking people to be vigilant and keep an eye on children.

"It's a big beach. When the tide goes out, it gets even bigger," said Mullaney.

Dogs and alcohol aren't allowed on the beach. Starting this year, smoking is also banned.

"It's good, number one, from a health aspect. Obviously, second-hand smoke is a concern for everyone. Also a safety issue - people step on them," said Matthew Sisk, the DCR's deputy commissioner. "Cigarette butts are the number one cause of litter."
