Survey Finds Boston Ranks 46th in Highest Murder Rate

The number of homicides in Boston have decreased slightly from last year, according to a new survey.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association Violent Crimes Survey found that the murder rate in Boston is 3 per 100,000 people — ranking the city 46 out of 61 on the list of cities nationwide.

The survey found that 20 people were murdered in Boston in the first half of 2017. Boston was ranked two places higher in 2016.

However, the number of non-fatal shootings in the first half of 2017 have increased with a total of 111, while in 2016, there were 93.

Nationwide, the number of people who were murdered in the first half of the year rose to 3,081 from 2,994 for the same time period last year.
