Police: Suspect Found With Gun, Drugs in Vehicle Following Chase

A man is in custody after leading police on a multi-town chase on the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate 495 on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the chase began in Auburn at about 4:30 p.m., where the driver was seen acting suspiciously behind the La Quinta Inn on Southbridge Street. Officers tried to arrest him there, but they say he resisted. A stun gun was used, but was unsuccessful, and police say he was able to get back into his vehicle to flee.

"Unfortunately the taser wasn't successful and they actually had to remove - they still had the leeds in him when he arrested," Auburn Detective Sgt. Scott Mills recalled.

Authorities pursued him, and the chase ended in a crash on I-495 in Marlborough, on the Exit 24 off-ramp to Route 20, where he lost control of his vehicle at about 4:50 p.m.

The suspect was identified by Auburn Police as Marqus Mitchell, 33, of Peabody.

"The suspect emerged from the vehicle with a firearm in hands and threw the firearm at the troopers," said Mills."(He) wouldn’t take his hands out of his pockets. Was acting somewhat suspiciously. The officers were concerned... they began a pat down."

During the pat down, police said drugs were found on Mitchell and a magazine for the gun was found inside the car.

Police said they had to use pepper spray to subdue Mitchell and were then able to take him into custody.

According to police, no one was injured.

"When I heard the officers say over the radio that he had a gun, my heart sank and it brought me right back to one year ago when Officer Tarentino was shot. I am thankful no one was hurt," said Auburn Police Chief Andy Sluckis.

Mitchell is being held on $25,000 cash bail. Police said he will be arraigned Wednesday in Worcester District Court on a multitude of charges including failure to stop for police and brandishing a gun.
