The blaze was reported near 277 Granite Street about 6 a.m., firefighters said. When fire crews located a body near the area, police were called.

Neighbors said the area was known as a dumping ground for many things, like couches, boats, furniture — though not bodies.

"I'm not surprised," said Denise Labaire. "My neighbor even said they dump everything else. We weren't shocked that eventually it would be that. Something needs to be done down here with cameras."

The investigation is ongoing. Officers investigated for over nine hours, using a drone and a police dog.

"This being in my neighoborhood, it is scary. We have kids here," area resident James Vega said.
