Teen Seriously Injured in Fall From Cliff

A 16-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury after falling from a cliff late Friday night in the woods of Westwood, Massachusetts.

Police found the girl after discovering a group of teens drinking by a bonfire in the woods near a complex of condominiums on High Street around 11:45 p.m. Westwood Police Chief Jeffrey Silva said there were 25 to 50 teenagers in the woods, but an exact number is unclear because some of the teens ran off.

Officers saw the victim, who Silva told necn was unconscious, beneath a 20-foot rocky ledge, stuck between two boulders. Ten responders spent 20 minutes treating, stabilizing and carrying her out of the woods on a rescue sled. The process was made more difficult by the steep decline.

The victim was not drinking. Police do not know whether she was one of the teens who ran after officers arrived or if she had fallen earlier in the darkness.

Another teen sustained minor injuries when an aerosol can exploded, apparently having been thrown into the bonfire.

All of the uninjured teens were released to their parents.

Westwood Schools Superintendent John Antonucci told necn the school community is thinking about the injured student and her family, and the school district is hoping for a full recovery.
