This Giant Outdoor Skating Path Opens on City Hall Plaza in December

You've heard rumblings of big changes coming to City Hall Plaza. And this December, you can experience them in person. That's right, the "Boston Winter presented by Berkshire Bank" is officially set to debut in just a couple weeks.

The name might leave a bit to be desired, but the vision is a dramatic departure from the drab, empty brick expanse that occupies the space now.

From a City release:

Open to the public seven days a week, Bostonians and visitors alike will be dazzled by the winter activities, holiday shopping from a mix of local and international vendors, an eclectic array of hospitality experiences at the Urban Lodge, Vinopolis Interactive Wine Experiences, The Chocolate Story, and attractions including Santa’s House and a pedal-powered Holiday Tree.

Key features will include a massive open holiday market as well as a nearly 11,000-square-foot outdoor ice skating path, the first of its kind in New England, that will remain open through February.

When your feet get cold, take off the skates and peruse the more than 40 chalets featuring boutique style shops showcasing a wide array of gifts, food and more.

“We’re thrilled to work with Mayor Walsh and the City of Boston to activate this space in the heart of Boston, create a setting that will bring business and community together and provide exciting memories at City Hall Plaza for all,” said Sean A. Gray, Berkshire Bank’s Chief Operating Officer.

This is just the first installment of a three-year activation plan imagined by Boston Garden Development Corp and the City of Boston Property Management Department to revitalize and reimagine City Hall Plaza. Programming and activations for future seasons, we're told, will be announced at a later date.

Also, because this is important, it appears the giant "Boston" sign, perfect for selfies, is part of the final vision, in all its glory.
