Trial Begins for Man Accused of Choking, Killing Girlfriend With Dog Leash

The victim was found dead by her mother with a dog leash tied around her neck

The trial began Wednesday for a man accused of choking and killing a Massachusetts mother of seven with a dog leash two years ago.

Ryan Power faces charges that include murder, strangulation and assault and battery on a household or family member in connection to the 2017 death of 31-year-old Leah Penny, whose body was found in her Malden home with a dog leash tied around her neck.

The suspect allegedly fled to New Hampshire following the murder and was arrested in Seabrook as a fugitive from justice, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

Power and the victim were in a romantic relationship. The defendant was previously arrested in May 2017 for assault and battery following a domestic dispute.

The trial is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.
