Truck Fire in Ted Williams Tunnel Causes Delays on Mass Pike

The Massachusetts Turnpike eastbound in Boston was temporarily shut down on Monday afternoon after a trash truck caught fire.

State police said the fire occurred in the eastbound lane of the highway in the Ted Williams Tunnel.

The truck was fully engulfed in flames, and the back of it had to be sawed open in order to gain access to the fire.

The highway was closed in both directions for some time due to heavy smoke conditions.

Around 1:10 p.m., the westbound lanes reopened, but the eastbound highway remained closed. As of 2:30 p.m., Boston Fire said the truck had been cleared from the tunnel.

The cause of the fire was a ruptured fuel line. No one was injured.
