Two Fall River Children Hit by Car on the Way to School

Two children were hit by a car on their way to school Monday morning in Fall River, Massachusetts according to Fall River Police.

Officers responded to a call at approximately 6:45 a.m. that two children had been hit at the intersection of County Street and Eastern Avenue.

Witnesses say the driver, Jose A. Montalvo, 45, disregarded the crossing guard's warnings despite the guard hold a stop sign, wearing his reflective vest, and blowing his whistle. The car then collided with two children crossing within the crosswalk at Eastern Avenue.

By the time the vehicle slowed, one child was stuck under the front bumper and suffered a broken femur. The other child, who had attempted to pull the other out of the way of the car, had her foot run over.

Both children were transported to nearby hospitals.

Montalvo, a resident of Fall River, is expected to appear in court on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, and failure to stop for a stop sign.
