Two Horses Euthanized After Being Hit byTruck in Middleboro

Two horses had to be euthanized Thursday evening after they were struck by a truck.

The accident happened around 5:49 p.m. on Vernon Street in Middleboro, Massachusetts.

The two horses had escaped from their owner, and were struck by a truck driving on Route 44.

The 58-year-old male driver, from Bridgewater, initially left the scene to remove to take two young children from the scene, according to officials.

The driver did return and spoke with the investigating officer.

He told the officer that a driver on the opposite side of the road had flashed his vehicle's lights at him, and that's where his focus was when he collided with the two horses running in the roadway.

Witnesses said the 58-year-old was not speeding at the time of the crash.

Middleborough Animal Control responded to the scene.

Dr. Lauren Bernstein from Chase Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Bart Harrison from Middleboro Veterinary Clinic also responded.

Both horses had to be euthanized on scene.

There are no criminal charges pending against the driver.
