US Attorney Sues City of Quincy for Dumping Sewage Into Boston Harbor

The lawsuit alleges the city of Quincy dumps untreated wastewater into Boston Harbor, Dorchester Bay and Quincy Bay

The U.S. Attorney's Office has filed a lawsuit against the city of Quincy, Massachusetts for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act by dumping sewage into the Boston Harbor and surrounding water.

The lawsuit was announced Friday morning and states the city dumps untreated wastewater into Boston Harbor, Dorchester Bay and Quincy Bay. Water samples collected from 2009 through 2018 was gathered as evidence and shows Quincy dumped pollutants that carried E. coli and Enteroccous into the waters, according to the complaint.

In addition to allegedly dumping waste to beaches, Quincy is also accused of having its sewer system overflowed numerous times, causing discharge of untreated wastewater and sewage.

The Clean Water Act was established in 1972 and states it is illegal to discharge pollutants into navigable waters unless a permit is obtained.
