A vehicle that may have been involved in a fatal dump truck crash on Route 1 in Saugus, Massachusetts, Wednesday is being sought by police.

Massachusetts State Police say the vehicle sought may have triggered the initial crash between the Walnut Street and Lynn Fells Parkway exits around 2 p.m. and fled on the highway shortly after.

Officials are seeking an older model silver or gray Honda CRV with a spare tire compartment attached to the rear hatch door. The vehicle may not have any damage to it. It may have entered the Taco Bell near the scene after the crash before getting back on the highway and driving off.

Police say the vehicle may have caused a commercial vehicle traveling southbound in the right lane to swerve, impacting the dump truck. The truck then spun out of control and then hit the steel guardrail.

The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as John R. Thebeau, 62, of Wilmington. The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured.

All lanes were closed for about two hours on Route 1 south in Saugus at Walnut Street. The southbound lanes reopened just before 5 p.m.
