Vermont Child Dies in Hospital After Falling in Lake

A five-year-old has died at a Vermont hospital following a drowning incident at Lowell Lake State Park that also claimed the life of his grandmother Friday.

Julie Lawrence, 55, was with her two grandsons at the lake Friday when Jackson Lawrence, 5, fell off of a flotation device into the water and began to struggle, according to the Vermont State Police. Julie and the older child, who is nine years-old, came to his aid, when Julie began to struggle and the older child swam to shore for help. When rescuers arrived on the scene, both the grandmother and Jackson were unresponsive. Julie was pronounced desceased at the scene.

Jackson Lawrence was transported to Darmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he was initially listed in critical condition. He passed away Sunday just after 1:00 p.m. The investigation has indicated that there were no life jackets in use during the lake incident.

The nine-year-old child is safe and in good health.
