What a Waste! 7,000 Pounds of Lobsters Spill Onto Highway After Maine Crash

A truck carrying 7,000 pounds of lobster rolled over on Route 1 in Brunswick, Maine on Wednesday morning, spilling 60 to 70 crates of live lobster on the side of the road.

Brunswick police said they received several 911 calls around 11:26 a.m. reporting a single-vehicle accident on Route 1 north just east of the Cook's Corner on-ramp.

Responding police and fire units confirmed a single-vehicle rollover with extensive damage to the body of the truck.

The vehicle, a 2016 International refrigerated box truck, left the roadway, exited the right shoulder and rolled over. The truck was registered to Cozy Harbor Seafood, Inc. out of Portland.

The lobsters were contained in crates, but some of them broke open as a result of the crash. Many of the lobsters were packed up and hauled away but they will not be sold.

The driver, Jose Albino Horrach, 39, of South Portland, was taken to Mid Coast Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation, but the wet roadway is believed to have contributed to the crash.
