Teen Stabs Classmate Who Didn't Invite Him to Sleepover

A teenager is facing charges for allegedly stabbing another teen on Sunday in Whitman, Massachusetts.

A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following the stabbing in the area of 983 Washington Street around 9 p.m. Sunday, according to Whitman police.

Police said another 16-year-old boy has been charged with assault to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury in connection with the stabbing. He is expected to be arraigned in Brockton Juvenile Court on Monday.

Whitman Police Chief Scott Benton told reporters Monday that the two teens "definitely knew each other" and that "obviously there was a disagreement of some sort." Both the suspect and the victim are students at Whitman-Hanson High School.

Benton added that other juveniles were present at the time of the stabbing.

Someone who knows both people told NBC10 Boston it all started when the victim didn't invite the suspect to his sleepover. Investigators said they're still working to piece together how it all unfolded.

"We're talking about juveniles here. There's nothing I can imagine in your life at the age of 16 that could possibly cause the death of another person," Benton said.

A neighbor said a family of three lives in the house that is the focus of the investigation.

When police arrived at the scene, the victim was located in the yard of the home. He was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth with serious injuries, but police said he is expected to survive.

Police said a knife with a 4-inch blade was also found at the scene.

Details on what led up to the stabbing were not immediately clear. The incident remains under investigation.

Because both the victim and the suspect are juveniles, their names are not being released by police.
