Wintry Mix for Some Thursday Morning Ahead of Warm End to Work Week

This evening, a frontal boundary is approaching northwestern New England. Most of us will stay dry overnight with an overcast sky and we'll see lows in the mid 30s south and upper 20s north.

This boundary will trigger scattered light snow showers and a wintry mix from northern Vermont, southeast through central New Hampshire, western Maine, and southeastern Massachusetts overnight. Light, slushy snow is expected — about a coating to 1 inch with 1-3 inches in higher elevations across Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. A coating of snow is possible across eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire with temperatures around freezing for overnight lows in the suburbs.

The snow ends before dawn Thursday morning and a warm front lifts north, allowing for a gusty south wind and warming temperatures in the afternoon. Highs Thursday afternoon will be around 50 degrees and this will lead to more snowmelt. Trees and flowers are starting to awaken from the winter slumber and our pollen count starts to increase the next several days.

Even more warmth is in the forecast Friday with a strong south wind and an approaching cold front from the west. This is the same system that created a very strong cyclone across the Great Plains. The system strengthened rapidly, dropping at least 24 millibars of pressure in 24 hours and that's why the term "bombogenesis" has been trending on social media lately. This low pressure system passes well northwest of us for Friday, but will drag a cold front across the northeast.

Scattered rain is possible across northwestern New England Thursday afternoon, but the rain becomes more widespread with embedded downpours on Friday. A rumble of thunder is possible across the south coast, but we're not expecting severe thunderstorms. Highs will be in the low 60s with a gusty south wind.

The cold front sweeps through by Saturday, cooling us to the low 50s and it stays windy. Highs fall to the low 40s for St. Patrick's Day but at least we will see lots of sunshine.

A disturbance brushes by us Monday, so we keep a low risk for a wintry mix in the 10-day, with highs in the low 40s Monday, dry and low 40s Tuesday.

Spring begins next Wednesday and we have another disturbance passing to our south as a coastal storm sometime between Wednesday and Thursday. Uncertainty is high on the storm track. Temperatures will warm a tad next week with highs in the mid 40s Wednesday and Thursday, and back to the low 50s Friday.
