Girlfriend Arrested in Fatal Stabbing of Worcester Man: PD

Officers found a 40-year-old man with a stab wound to his torso at a home on Dixfield Street Friday morning and arrested his girlfriend on the scene

A woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of her boyfriend Friday morning in Worcester, Massachusetts, police said.

Officers responded to a home on Dixfield Street in the city's Greendale area just before 9 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from the victim's mother, according to police.

When officers arrived, the 40-year-old victim was found with a stab wound to his torso, police said. The man, who has not yet been identified, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jennifer Algarin, the victim's 32-year-old girlfriend, was placed under arrest at the scene. She is facing a charge of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon with serious bodily injury resulting. She could face additional charges, according to police.

"She looked, like, in a daze, and she was just standing there in cuffs," said neighbor Robert Villatico. "And just, like, pacing."

Authorities are working to determine whether there was some kind of mental health issue involved. Police are looking into a claim that sleepwalking may have played a role.

"There's some question of it being a mental health issue," Worcester Police Lt. Sean Murtha said. "We're not gonna make a determination. It was called in by the victim's mother. Apparently the suspect did try to help him medically after it happened."

Police said the couple had a rocky relationship. Neighbors say police had responded multiple times in the past for issues between the couple.

"They were both good neighbors. They've both been great neighbors to the community but with one another it was difficult," neighbor John Synder said.

"He was the first one to say, 'Hi, nice to meet you guys, welcome here,'" Rosie Snyder added about the victim, explaining that he was the first one to welcome her to the neighborhood.

Police say Algarin may have even tried to help her boyfriend after the crime, but he died from his injuries.

Algarin is expected to appear in court on Monday. It's unclear if she has an attorney.
