Work Set to Begin on Piscataqua River Bridge

Transportation officials from Maine and New Hampshire are getting ready to begin a rehabilitation project on the Piscataqua River Bridge that carries Interstate 95 between Portsmouth and Kittery.

Planning for the work on the Interstate 95 bridge comes as construction is wrapping up on the nearby Sara Mildred Long Bridge, due to open to traffic this fall.

Some of the improvements include repairing the road deck.

The current cost estimate is about $21.5 million, which will be split between the two states. The Portsmouth Herald reports the project is expected to go out to bid in February with work expected to start next summer.

The work is expected to take two to three years because much of the work will be conducted during off-peak travel times.
