Wrongful Death Suit Filed After Teen Drowns in School Pool

The family of a 17-year-old Massachusetts boy who drowned in the Lowell High School pool in August 2012 has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city.

The Lowell Sun reports Eddie Gayyean's parents say the school failed to control pool access and should have known there was "an unreasonable risk" to students using it without supervision.

The lawsuit filed last month seeks $100,000 for pain and suffering.

A swim club instructor found Gayyean at the bottom of the pool. Authorities said he drowned accidentally.

His parents said he went to the school to file paperwork for his upcoming senior year. Their lawsuit says cameras showed Gayyean, who didn't know how to swim, trying to get into the pool area.

The Middlesex district attorney found several doors in the school were propped open for renovations.
