You might want to hold on to your old football cards after reading this.
An extremely rare Tom Brady rookie card sold for over $400,000 in an online auction.
The card, part of the 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket collection, was auctioned off on Monday for $400,100.
The auction was coordinated by eBay and PWCC Marketplace, which announced Tuesday that the $400,100 is the highest auction price in history for a football card.
"This sale was record-setting but also largely predicted," PWCC Marketplace CEO Brett Huigens said in a statement. "The trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market's most desired issues."
Football cards, while perhaps not as widely collected as their baseball counterparts, can fetch a high price tag under certain conditions.
After Tom Brady was drafted 199th overall in the 2000 draft, and sat on the bench his first year behind Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe, there would have been little to indicate that the Brady card would someday be worth nearly half a million dollars.

After all, since the number of players that go in and out of the NFL on a yearly basis is in the thousands, few would collectors at the time were likely to put much stock into the card.
But after a player like Brady, who has arguably had two Hall of Fame careers, has accomplished what he has accomplished, it's no surprise that the card, of which reportedly only 100 were produced, has blown up in value.
