Man Who Sparked Amherst College Lockdown Found Dead: DA

A Massachusetts man was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities say the police response to this incident launched a lockdown of a western Massachusetts college campus Wednesday night.

The man, only identified as a 27-year-old Amherst resident, was found dead in a wooded area on Mill Lane near Groff Park in Amherst, according to the Northwestern district attorney's office.

The lockdown at nearby Amherst College was lifted by 10:45 p.m.

Foul play is not suspected in this shooting, according to the DA, and the official cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
