Bell's Market Space in South Boston May Be Redeveloped Into Apartment Complex With Market, Restaurant

by Marc Hurwitz

A longtime market and butcher shop in South Boston could become home to a residential building, though the market would apparently stay--and another option for food could also be included.

According to a post from Banker & Tradesman, George Khoury of Bell's Market on Dorchester Street has submitted plans to build a five-story apartment complex where the store currently resides, with the ground floor having retail space that would include the market and extra space for a restaurant. The article says that plans for the project have been filed with the Boston Planning and Development Agency, though little other information has been given, including a possible time frame and what kind of restaurant might go into the ground level space; as soon as we get more information, we will post an update here.

Bell's Market is a neighborhood grocery store in the Telegraph Hill section of Southie that sells produce, everyday groceries, beer, wine, and a variety of meats from the butcher counter in the back.

The address for Bell's Market is 246 Dorchester Street, South Boston, MA, 02127.
