Somerville Ranked Top City in US to Open a Brewery

Somerville, Massachusetts has been ranked as the top city in the country to open a brewery.

A new study by Bid-On-Equipment -- a company that buys and sells used beer equipment -- said Somerville topped the list because of its high 21+ population, low state excise tax on barrels of beer and one of the lowest brewery license fees in the country.

Boston came in 11th on the list, while Worcester was ranked 23rd.

Cities with a population of at least 50,000 people were considered for the list. The cities were then compared across two main categories: business environment and business costs.

Madison, Wisconsin and Royal Oak, Michigan rounded out the top 3.

According to the Brewers Association, the number of craft breweries has increased rapidly in the U.S. over the past decade, spiking from under 1,500 in 2007 to over 7,000 as of July 2018.
