"I am shocked just because, like, you know, I park on this street, I walk on this street every day," said Gio Costomiris.

Costomiris works in teen outreach in the Roxbury community and was handing out flyers on Savin Street before a shooting broke out at around 4 p.m. Thursday.

"Thank goodness it was not anytime in the last hour, because we could've witnessed or been a part of that unfortunate incident, as well," he added.

Police said they found a woman with a gunshot wound inside a Savin Street home and had an ambulance take her to the hospital, where she fights for her life.

Moments later, a person of interest was apprehended.

Authorities sealed off the street in what they called a "fairly large" ballistic crime scene.

Three other shootings took place in Boston Wednesday night, leaving two people dead.

"We're doing all we can to make sure the community is safe. We're working with all of our partners around violence, but gun violence is a horrible thing, and we need to do more in general," admitted Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox.

That concern is also shared by Costomiris, who believes more can be done to end the cycle of violence.

"Do I know that violence exists in Dorchester, Roxbury? Yes," confessed Costomiris. "And it continues to exist because of little-to-no access to the mental health resources that are going to teach a child that playing with a gun or having a gun isn't the right move in the first place."

The woman who was shot remained in the hospital in critical condition as of Thursday night.

Investigators said the shooting was not random, but did not elaborate further on the relationship between the shooter and the victim.

The investigation is underway. Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives at 617-343-4470 or leave an anonymous tip by calling 1-800-494-TIPS.
