Brockton Firefighter Tops Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth to Make Cut at U.S. Open

Matt Parziale needed a birdie putt on 18 in Round 2 to get over the line and he delivered

The 2018 U.S. Open cut sliced off some huge names. Gone are Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day. Headed home are Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott, Martin Kaymer and Jon Rahm. Throw in some other major tournament winners such as Keegan Bradley, Charl Schwartzel and Ernie Els. Shinnecock Hills beat them all.

But Brockton firefighter Matt Parziale is one of 67 still playing this weekend.

Parziale, one of only three amateurs who made the cut, needed a birdie putt on 18 in Round 2 to get over the line and he delivered.

Social media reaction has poured in for the 31 year old, from the mayor of Brockton to golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

Parziale, who made the 8-over cut by one shot, teed off in Round 3 Saturday at 10:24 a.m. He is paired with Byeong Hun An.

"On behalf of the entire City of #Brockton, Good Luck today, @Matt_Parziale!" Mayor Bill Carpenter tweeted. "The #CityofChampions is in your corner!"

Go, Parziale! We’re rooting for you!
