Gas Station Clerk Shot Confronting Alleged Shoplifter Over Bottled Water in Cambridge

A gas station clerk was injured early Wednesday morning after being shot by an alleged shoplifter in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to police.

Authorities said the clerk confronted two people outside the Richie’s Shell at 1001 Cambridge St. just before 4 a.m. after one of them allegedly stole a bottle of water.

"The suspect had purchased a bottle of soda and then started to argue with the clerk about a bottle of water and having to pay for water," said Jeremy Warnick, Cambridge Police Director of Communications and Media Relations.

One suspect allegedly pulled out a bag from a vehicle and then a firearm, firing at the clerk.

"The clerk then ran out after him in an attempt to get the water back and speak to that suspect who then turned around and fired at the foot of the clerk," said Warnick.

The suspects then fled the scene — one in a Jeep Cherokee and the shooter on foot. Cambridge police said the driver who fled is being questioned by investigators, and the firearm used in the shooting has been found.

The suspect in the shooting had long hair and was wearing dark pants and a blue shirt, according to police.

The 50-year-old clerk, who has not been identified, was taken to Cambridge Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police said he was grazed in the foot and was released from the hospital.

The clerk, who later went back to the gas station said he was OK when he got into his vehicle to leave.

Amaro Pires, a friend of the victim, said the clerk was halfway through his shift when the shooting happened.
"He got kids and stuff. Let that water go for free, then you earn another day, another life," Pires said.

One couple who lives nearby told NBC10 Boston they are scared of the violence in the area.

"The kids play all the time here. They go outside. It's so scary for us," said one resident who did not give his name.

The 24-hour gas station was closed for hours while police investigated the scene. Authorities are reviewing store surveillance video and said they think they know who the shooter is.
