Champion Golfer Previously Denied Trophy for Being Girl Wins Again

A female high school student once denied a trophy for winning a boys' golf tournament in Massachusetts won another tournament on Wednesday — and she received a trophy for it.

Lunenburg High School junior Emily Nash won the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association girls' individual title by four strokes, according to The Boston Globe.

Last October, Nash's score of 75 at the Central Massachusetts Division 3 boys' golf tournament was better than the runner-up. But Nash wasn't awarded first place and did not advance to the state tournament because of a rule set by the MIAA.

The rule states that girls playing on a fall boys' team can't be entered in the Boys' Fall Individual Tournament. That meant Nash's score only counted toward her team's total.

"I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t have a title — it just is what it is," Nash said at the time.

At Wednesday's tournament, held at Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, Nash pushed past the disappointment to clinch a win and a trophy by the same organization that did not recognize her previous win.

“It’s just great to come back, even after what happened in the fall, to not let it get me down or anything like that,” Nash told the Globe.
