Commonwealth Bridge Construction Will Cause Detours Delays Headaches

Construction on the Commonwealth Avenue bridge begins Thursday, July 26 and is expected to last through Aug. 11

What to Know

  • Crews will begin working on the west side of the bridge on July 26.
  • Public transportation in the immediate area will be affected by the construction.
  • Nearby businesses are concerned for their wellbeing and expect to lose patrons during the duration of the construction.

Some commuters into Boston should get ready for two weeks of headaches.

The Commonwealth Avenue bridge replacement project scheduled to start Thursday is expected to impact not just Comm Ave, but the Mass Pike as well as some MBTA services.

The work will require lane shutdowns and ramp closures on the Pike. While some lane shutdowns will occur overnight, some will be required during peak hours. Drivers are being warned to expect delays.

Comm Ave and the BU Bridge will close to vehicular traffic during the work, although cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross Comm Ave.

Service on the Green Line's B branch will be replaced with shuttle buses between Babcock and Blandford streets. Some bus routes will be detoured. Click here for a full list of scheduled impacts, detour routes and maps.

The work is expected to wrap up Aug. 11.
