Commuter Rail Train Strikes Abandoned Pickup Truck on Tracks

Police are investigating who left an abandoned pickup truck on the MBTA commuter rail tracks in South Weymouth, causing a train to crash into it.

Joe Pesaturo, spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, said a train on the Kingston/Plymouth line struck the unoccupied truck at about 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Pesaturo said none of the 19 people on the train at the time of the crash were injured.

There was no damage to the Pond Street railroad crossing but the incident is causing significant delays while the scene is being cleared.

Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan told The Boston Globe that the truck broke down on the tracks.

He says an investigation is ongoing.
