Consultants Assessing MBTA Safety Protocols Is Costly to Agency: Report

Consultants hired to assess safety procedures for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority are reportedly coming at a high price.

A group hired by the transportation agency to examine their safety protocols costs $35,000 a month in consulting fees, The Boston Globe reports.

Documents revealed that Carolyn Flowers, the former Federal Transit Administration director, will be paid $499 per hour while Carmen Bianco, the former leader of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, will receive more than $400 hourly. The group will be led by former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, the Globe reports.

The consultants were called following the June 11 derailment of an MBTA Red Line train near the JFK/U Mass Station in Dorchester. The derailment damaged signaling equipment that is expected to be repaired by October

The derailment was followed by power problems, wire problems and a train fire on the troubled service.
