‘Crazy': Roxbury Community Searching for Answers After 14-Year-Old Shot and Killed

As police continue to search for suspects, people who live in the area say they’re getting fed up with the brazenness of this violence

Investigators and the community are searching for answers after a teen was killed and another child wounded in shootings in broad daylight in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood on Monday.

The violence broke out around midday Monday. Police say they found a 14-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound behind a building at the corner of Washington Street and Cobden Street in Roxbury. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, but he did not survive, according to authorities.

The second child, whose age hasn't been given, was found in an apartment just steps away from that fatal shooting. Police said that boy had also been shot, but he is expected to live.

The Uncornered Project is trying to help gang-involved youth in Boston break cycles of poverty and violence by connecting them to higher education.

“I said that doesn’t sound like no firecracker man and then I heard, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, and then I went upstairs to my house, right after that, it was like stray bullets," said witness Eric Washington, who lives nearby.

“I saw a few people getting dragged away on the stretchers, so I saw them coming out with a few kids. I figured 'Ugh, they’re young too, very young to be shooting out like that,'" said Tony Lopez, who also lives in the neighborhood

Investigators towed away several motorbikes from the scene, but it’s unclear how they may be related to this investigation.

"I haven’t seen it like this in a long time, nothing bad like this, like this crazy," Washington said.

Authorities share that concern.

"It’s concerning," Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. "I can tell you before when I was in the DA’s office on homicide response I don’t remember coming to this many daytime shootings. There seem to be more and more of them."

Police are still searching for any suspects. They said they believe this was an isolated incident.

Monday's shooting unfolded less than a week after a teenager shot a classmate outside Burke High School, just up Washington Street.
