Five people live in the structure, but no one was home at the time of the fire

A three-alarm fire ripped through a multi-story building in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood on Newbury Street on Christmas day, temporarily closing the popular street.

Boston firefighters said crews responded to the blaze just before 10 a.m. Wednesday in the rear of a five-story building located on 128 Newbury St. An investigation determined the fire started in a trashcan and spread to the building.

An image posted by the Boston Fire Department showed extensive damage to part of the building, which appeared nearly all black due to the heavy smoke.

Five people live in the structure, but no one was home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

Details on what led up to the trashcan fire were not immediately clear.
