DA: Teenage Boy Drowns in Fall River Pond

Boy's drowning believed to be accidental

Massachusetts authorities say a 14-year-old boy who was pulled from a pond in Fall River Tuesday afternoon has died.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said the drowning at South Watuppa Pond is believed to be accidental.

Authorities said the boy and his friend, a 13-year-old girl, had jumped into the pond from a rocky ledge around 12:45 p.m. and immediately began showing signs of distress.

Three bystanders jumped into the water to help the teenagers who appeared to be flailing. The bystanders were able to successfully assist the girl but were unable to rescue the male victim before he went under the water and did not resurface.

When first responders arrived and dove into the water, they were initially unsuccessful in locating the victim. The teen was located about 40 minutes later and rushed to St. Anne's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The name of the victim is being withheld.
