Driver Hospitalized After Pickup Truck Crashes Into Pond in Westwood

Police say driver struck telephone pole and crashed through fence before going into pond

A Massachusetts man was hospitalized Monday afternoon after police say he somehow lost control of his pickup truck and ended up in a pond in Westwood.

Police responded to the crash at Buckmaster Pond just before 6 p.m.

Authorities said the man in his 40s struck a telephone pole and crashed through a fence before ending up in the pond.

"It was a big thump. I came out the house and saw the truck in the water," said neighbor Sam Sinno.

The driver, who was the only one in the truck, was able to get himself out after crashing into the frozen pond. The truck then partially sunk.

"You could only see the lights, because it's so dark down there. You could only see the lights under the water," said witness Rich Granata.

Neighbors then came to the aid of the man who was cold.

"A few others had jumped out and started to give him blankets and extra jackets and whatever to keep him warm," Granata recalled.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Crews remained at the scene to remove the truck from the pond.

The exact cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said charges, if any, may be filed Tuesday in Dedham District Court.
