A driver was killed Wednesday morning in a wrong-way crash on a Massachusetts highway, state police confirm.

Troopers responded just after 10 a.m. to Route 79 in Fall River, near the intersection with North Main Street, after a wrong-way driver had been reported.

When police arrived, they found a Nissan Altima, which had been driving southbound in the northbound lanes, had collided with a Ford Escape.

The Altima's driver, 75-year-old Raymond Martin of Somerset, sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other driver, a 59-year-old Fall River man, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Police do not know why Martin was on the wrong side of the road.
