Ex-Congressman Named Next UMass System President

Marty Meehan was appointed UMass president-elect Friday in a unanimous vote by the university's board of trustees

A former congressman and current chancellor of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell is taking over the entire five-campus UMass system.

Marty Meehan was appointed UMass president-elect Friday in a unanimous vote by the university's board of trustees.

Meehan succeeds Robert Caret, who is stepping down in June to become chancellor of the University of Maryland system.

Meehan served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 until 2007, when he was named chancellor of the Lowell campus, his alma mater. He has been credited with raising UMass-Lowell's profile.

The other finalist for the job was Harvard Business School professor John Quelch.

UMass has nearly 73,000 students at campuses in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell and a medical school in Worcester.
