Parents in Boston are concerned after two incidents involving guns at schools.

A teenager was arrested Friday after allegedly carrying a gun illegally near a South Boston high school.

Excel High School on G Street was placed in safe mode as police responded to a report of an armed person, police said. Around noon, they found and arrested 18-year-old Jamari Searcy of South Boston.

Police say they found Searcy trying to enter a vehicle near Island View Place, more than a mile away. Staff from Longwood Security Services told officers he had been seen ditching a backpack, which was soon found.

A loaded Smith & Wesson revolver was found in the bag, police said.

The safe mode order at the school was later lifted.

"I want to thank the Boston Police for their quick response, ensuring that our school was safe and clearing us to resume our day," Head of School Jerleen John wrote in a message to the Excel High School community.

Some students who left early said their teachers told them to put trash bags over windows.

The police search comes a day after a 7-year-old brought a semi-automatic pistol to a school in Dorchester.

Detectives are now looking into the incident, as city leaders seek accountability for whoever allowed the child access to the dangerous weapon.

Searcy is due to appear at a future date in South Boston District Court to answer to charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
