FIRST ALERT: Wintry Mix Brings Snow to Some Areas, Freezing Rain to Others

We have a First Alert for tonight through early Thursday morning as a wintry mix moves through. Temperatures hover around freezing across Boston, central and western Massachusetts. In the higher elevations and northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, we will see snow and sleet mixing. Southern New England will get mostly rain.

There is a short window where we may accumulate light ice around Interstate 495, Worcester County, and towards the Berkshires tonight.

The temperatures rise enough to switch over to rain by the morning commute. About a tenth inch to quarter inch of ice accumulation is possible. A minor system with minor impacts, but it will make untreated road and surfaces slick between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Scattered rain continues Thursday morning across southern New England with slushy snow north. By afternoon, most of us will be cloudy with areas of drizzle, mist, a northeast wind and temperatures in the upper 30s. It will be a raw day. Freezing drizzle is possible across the mountains Thursday afternoon.

Thursday night scattered rain moves in as a warm front lifts through New England. The spotty showers linger into Friday. With the southwest airflow Friday afternoon we will still reach the mid-50s even though clouds hang tough.

The cold front passes through Friday evening, bringing temperatures back to around 30 for Saturday.

A gusty northwest wind will add to the chill to begin the weekend. North and west of Boston a few snow squalls may pop up as the arctic airmass takes over Friday evening into Saturday morning. Sunday’s highs will also be in the 30s with more sunshine.

Next week there are discrepancies between forecast models on the timing and precipitation type on a couple systems. One moving nearby Monday into Tuesday could give us some snow, or may miss us south. The larger system Wednesday into Thursday may bring a mix, snow north and rain south, versus mostly rain according to the other model.

Temperatures will be stuck in the 30s all next week so there is a chance for snow at some point in Boston but we're not holding our breath on that.
