Flight Cancellations Continue at Logan Airport Ahead of Busy Travel Weekend

Friday afternoon's anticipated thunderstorms across parts of Massachusetts are expected to add to ongoing delays

Nearly 100 flights have been cancelled at Boston Logan International Airport Friday morning, and more than 50 flights are delayed due to weather in other parts of the country.

Friday morning's cancellations and delays come after hundreds more flight schedule disruptions were reported on Thursday.

Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan said weather at other airports, especially along the East Coast, was to blame for the delays, noting that these kinds of issues are common during summer thunderstorm season.

Friday afternoon's anticipated thunderstorms across parts of Massachusetts are expected to add to ongoing delays.

Friday: Early AM shower departs for a warm, humid day with scattered PM thunder. Highs in the 80s.

Some frustrated travelers took to social media, reporting that they'd been waiting for hours at ticket counters, and even on their plane.

"We were on the tarmac for at least three hours," one woman told NBC10 Boston at Logan Airport.

"We're all trying to find flights, and they seem to be all sold out or terrible flights for tomorrow," another said.

Airlines and travel experts have warned the summer travel season could be chaotic, with issues like a pilot shortage meaning fewer flights available and weather delays an inevitability.

Multiple major airlines put the blame squarely on air traffic controllers and apologized to passengers stranded on the tarmac for hours.

With the U.S. Open and NBA Finals in town filling hotels, it meant stranded travelers were forced to sleep on cots, chairs or the floor.

"There's no hotels. I got an Uber and it was like $80 just driving around trying to find a hotel," said Vanessa Bagley of Belfast, Maine.

But that was the least of her worries. She's had two flights canceled trying desperately to get to Texas.

"They just kept getting canceled. My sister's getting married and the reception's tomorrow and we're not going to make it," she said.

Now all she can do is join this seemingly endless line of fellow travelers trying to rebook in person and on the phone, with little help in sight.

A lot of travelers' frustration stems from a lack of information.

"It's a 6-hour call wait,” said Jaina Aikens who's traveling home to Florida, "and then, when I got here, they said, 'This is just the line for the cancelations, so just get in it.'"
